Avalanche Goalie Anderson Makes Save in 66th Start of the Season Against the Ducks in Denver

Another kick in the gut by your Colorado Avalanche.  The Avs had small stretches where they played like the desperate hockey team you’d expect them to be, but otherwise seemed to either be too "on their heels" or much too widely aggressive, giving up too many opportunities for talented Ducks team. This is not a confident hockey club right now, its a team of guys waiting for someone else to make the play.
  • Scratches - I don’t understand sitting Quincey and playing Salei.  Yes, Quincey hasn’t been playing anywhere near his potential lately, but how does playing old man Salei help us now or for the future?  Salei will be either a 7th defenseman in the NHL or playing in the KHL next year.  Not only will Quincey still be in the NHL, he should be getting top minutes next season.
  • I also don’t understand why Svatos is getting ice time.  An offensive specialist who isn’t scoring is of no value to this team.  How bad has Svatos been?  10 points in 53 games.  Chris Durno has 8 points in 40 games.  Call up Stoa.
  • At least Sacco hasn’t done something really stupid like call up Tom Preissing (yet).
  • I can’t believe Altitude didn’t mention that Getzlaf wasn’t playing once during the entire game.
  • The game was full of big moments that seemed to all turn in the wrong direction for the Avs.  Cody’s disallowed goal (which was the correct call), the hit posts and missed nets on the great shift the Avs had after Hejduk scored and the score was 2-1, the near goal by Galiardi, leading to the Selanne game effectively ending the game, Duck goals in the final minute of the 1st and 2nd periods.
  • The veterans really let the team down in this one.  Hejduk failing to hit the net on great chances, Foote turning the puck over at his own blueline - directly leading to Anaheim’s 2nd goal, Tucker failing to get the puck up on a golden chance on the PP in the 2nd (but hey, at least he got it on net), Salei repeatedly turning the puck over in his own zone…
  • “Salei, who has been very good for the Avalanche tonight...” - Peter McNab, late in the 3rd period.
Next game: a pseudo-playoff game against Calgary at home on Friday, 7PM MDT.
