Dater posted that Svatos is on the trading block. My immediate reaction was “he wasn’t already on the block?”
He doesn't fit into Sherman's plan or play Sacco's game.
- He is too ineffective to warrant a top 6 forward spot, especially with so much promising young talent that needs to be developed.
- He’s not a playmaker. (95 goals / 67 assists in his NHL career - how often do you see an NHL player with more goals than assists?)
- He is even worse in a checking / 4th line role.
- He doesn’t play defense.
- He takes bad penalties.
- His best years are probably behind him.
- In only 11 games, Brandon Yip already has 1 less point than Svatos.
Dater is right that team's wouldn’t be willing to give up much (a mid round draft pick) to get Svatos. I say take what you can. We’d all like to believe that there is some idiot GM who would be dumb enough to give up a top prospect or a high draft pick for Svatos - as if he doesn’t have scouts who actually watch players or bother to find out how he has been playing since 2006. Svatos is a UFA after this season and most certainly won’t be resigned this summer - so if you don’t move him before the trade deadline, you won’t get anything for him.
Your other option is to give him ice time and hope he shows some signs of improvement. That’s too risky for a team who will be battling Calgary / Vancouver for the Northwest crown - you have to play your best players and give yourself your best chance to win every night. Plus, even if he shows some flashes, he has been so mediocre for so long (since 2006-07) that I’m not sure that a hot streak would really improve his stock much.
Bottom line: Move him, Sherman!
I feel like I'm trashing the guy, so I'll leave you with my favorite Svatos moment…
