I read John Grigg’s Top 10 Team Resolutions article a few days ago, and there was a blurb about the Avs that was so bad that its still bugging me.  In it, he wrote the following about the New Year’s Resolution for the Colorado Avalanche:

6. Colorado – Avoid delusions of grandeur.  The Avs got off to a great start, but a contending team they are not.  GM Greg Sherman must not think otherwise and take on unwieldy contracts or sacrifice the future for a chance at the playoffs.

I’ve got two really big problems with this blurb:

1. “GM Greg Sherman must not … take on unwieldy contracts or sacrifice the future…” Does he really think Sherman is functionally retarded?  Does he really believe there is a chance Sherman is going to wake up and decide he wants Ryan Smyth and his bad contract back so badly that he’d move Matt Duchene to LA to get him?

The reason why this statement is so laughable is the kind of trade makes no sense for Sherman to make, even if viewed only in the context of this season. Why?  Nearly all of the best players on this team (Stastny, Wolski, Stewart, O’Reilly, Galiardi, Duchene, Quincey) are what you’d call “the future”.  Why on earth would you move your best performing / cheapest players to bring in an old / less effective / more expensive player like Saku Koivu or Brian Rolston?

2. “…for a chance at the playoffs.” Are you freaking kidding me, John?!

Did you catch that?  He implies that Colorado has to make trade deadline moves to even have a shot at the playoffs – and that’s utterly ridiculous.  This team is in 1st place in the Northwest Division after 40+ games – that’s not an accident.  All this team has to do to make the playoffs is keep on doing what they’ve been doing all season long: maintain its fast, hungry and confident style of hockey.  Oh, and continue to not listen to John Grigg and the rest of the mainstream hockey media.

Avs Trivia
Which Avs player has NOT played in all 40 games this season?

Nice work on this one, the correct answer is Brett Clark, who was a healthy scratch game 3 of the season at Nashville.

A new question is up.  Good luck!
