Team USA beat the heavily favored Canadians in overtime 6-5 to win gold in Saskatoon. Team USA won its first gold medal since 2004. Canada had won the last five of these, dating back to 2005.
No Avalanche draft picks on Team USA (or Team Canada) but there were a couple of Denver / Avs connections:
- D Matt Donovan plays defense for the University of Denver.
- C Ryan Bourque is the son of Ray Bourque, who I guess used to be a decent player for the Colorado Avalanche.
A few thoughts on the game:
- Taylor “first pick overall in the 2010 Entry Draft” Hall is small and couldn’t physically hang with the Americans. It looks to me like he will get pushed around like a rag doll in the NHL next season.
- Jake Allen (Canadian starting goaltender) had a horrible game. To be fair, so did Mike Lee (USA). Both of them were eventually pulled.
- However Jordan Eberle, who is an Edmonton Oilers draft pick, is simply clutch. Watch out for that firebug in the next couple of seasons, Avs fans.
