Question: How do you lose to the NHL’s worst team (by a good 8 points) who is missing half of their lineup - including their player, Eric Staal?  Answer:  Easy.  You don’t skate.  You don’t work.
I think its safe to say the Avs are slumping.  Just a disastrous game, easily the worst of the season.  This loss actually really scares me.  To top if off, the Avs lost their best leader, Foote, with an ankle injury.
  • Canes Dman Aaron Ward was interviewed during the 2nd intermission: “Half of our team has been playing in the American Hockey League.”
  • For the first time this season, it appears the Avs are doubting themselves.  The only guys that have any sort of offensive confidence are Stewart, Yip and Hendricks.
  • Wolski, Galiardi, Duchene, Tucker and Hejduk were invisible tonight.  When your 4th line is easily your best line for very long stretches of the game, good for them, but not good for your team.
  • The 2nd Canes goal had no business going in.  To top in off, the first minute of a period is bad time to let in a very bad goal.  I’m in no way blaming this loss on him, but its near impossible to win games in the NHL when your goaltender gives up a bad goal.
  • How can you get down 2-0 in the first minute of the 2nd period and only muster 5 shots in the period?
  • Very poor offensive play from the defenseman / pointman on the PP.  Say what you want about Liles not earning his contract, but at least he has some offensive confidence on the PP - an extremely rare skill on the Avs blueline right now, unfortunately.
  • Cumiskey has not been nearly as effective as he was before he got hurt.
  • I am not a fan of Carolina’s third jerseys.

Next Game: The good news is that the Avs are right back at it Saturday @ Buffalo 5MST.
