If there is one thing that these young Avs clearly see have to work on, its holding on to a lead / closing out games.  This might be the hardest lesson to learn, especially in the "new" NHL.  2 goal leads have evaporated with too much frequency all season long.  Luckily, it didn't cost them a point or two tonight (like it has in the past.)

  • How about Duchene and O’Reilly stepping up to keep the Avs alive in the extra frames of the shootout?
  • To further the shootout went on, the better I felt about their chances.  The last couple of rounds, it was clear the Avs had a lot of more offensive skill left on the bench.
  • Duchene’s line was really, really good in the 1st period.  The first goal was all Duchene turning over the puck and burying the chance.
  • Outside of struggling to get his shot through on the PP, Quincey was very effective tonight.
  • Andy was solid.  I haven’t said that in a while because he always is - but its worth mentioning every once in a while because its so important.
  • After the Avs failed to score on the 4 on 3 / 5 on 3 in the 2nd and Buffalo got the PP goal, I was starting to have flashbacks to that bad loss in Nov at Edmonton.  Thank goodness for Brandon Yip (who is now officially my favorite player).
  • Unlike last season, the doesn’t look like the Avs aren’t naming extra alternate captains while Footer is out.
  • McLeod wasn’t good during the games 21-40, but he is starting to find his game now.
  • Avs were NOT outworked tonight!  Yay!
  • My immediate reaction after that Hecht goal was "You have to been (expletive) kidding me!"  You won't see a luckier goal all season long (especially at such a critical moment.)
  • I yelled at Wolski during the last 30 seconds of OT.  First for standing still in the defensive zone and second for not doing anything with the puck on a 2 on 1 with Duchene.
  • The Geico commercial (Ed Too Tall Jones) with the ‘spokesman’ clearly lip-syncing to the disembodied voice really, really bothers me.

Next game: A huge game in Calgary on Monday @ 8PM MST.
