The Avs were much better tonight vs. Game 3, but couldn’t find that goal. OT is always a crap shoot and this time it went San Jose’s way. The Avs have officially made this a long series and while you’ll always remember game 3 for its bizarre ending, game 5 and on will make up the defining moments you’ll remember when you think back on this series years from now.
Lets check in on the 5 things:
5. Win Game 1 or 2 in San Jose. Perma-Check.
4. Get production from Yip and / or Stewart. Not tonight. Both of them came close - Yip had a great chance late in the 3rd and Stewey set up O’Reilly with a great chance in OT, but it wasn’t meant to be.
3. Contain San Jose’s top line. Check. Thornton / Heatley / Marleau. Heatley was back in (although clearly not 100%) and San Jose got a whopping goose egg from the top line.
2. Have “Special” Special Teams. Not tonight. It was a wash, both teams went 1 for 2 on the PP.
1. Andy. Check. Even though Nabokov was solid, Andy was still clearly better. In fact, I hear that the Sharks have asked the NHL to investigate Anderson for the possible use of force fields.
Other thoughts:
- Since the 5 goal explosion in game 2, the Avs have scored 1 goal (Stasnty PPG, game 4). We really could use Hedjuk or Mueller back.
- Matty best game so far - but still not enough from young Duchene. The Sharks have clearly made an effort to rough him up a little bit and get him off his game and I think its been fairly successful.
- This just in: The Avs defenseman aren’t very good. When people start clambering for Brett Clark to get on the ice, you know its ugly.
Next game: On Thursday at San Jose, 8:30PM MDT.
