So my Lappy and Budaj for Leclaire prediction went up in flames with the first trade of the day -- Leclaire went to Ottawa. (nice.)

In actual trade news, Jordan Leopold is headed back to the Calgary Flames. In return, we got a 2nd round pick in the 2009 draft (originally from Montreal) and two defenseman
Lawrence Nycholat and Ryan Wilson. Leopold will be a UFA at the end of this season, and was not going to be resigned by the Avs, so it was nice to get something for a player that we would have otherwise lost for nothing.
  • Best Leo memory as an Av - scoring 2 game winners in Detroit against Osgood this season (one on a penalty shot, the other during extra rounds of the shootout.)
  • Worst Leo moment as an Av - Injuries, injuries, injuries...

The best piece of the deal is the 2nd round pick in what is supposed to be a deep draft -- (remember Stastny was a 2nd rounder). We also got journeyman Lawrence Nycholat, 29, who Calgary just picked up on waivers from Vancouver (so in other words - don't expect much). He played in only 14 games as a Canuck this season ans is considered a borderline NHLer / AHLer. Ryan Wilson is a little more promising, he's 22 and was playing with Quad Cities (Flames AHL team). He's an undersized offensive, "puck moving" Dman who still needs to work on the defense part of the game -- sounds a little like Cuminsky to me.

The other big story of the trade deadline day is who isn't leaving. Svatos, Tucker, Clark, and Salei's names were all thrown around by credible sources and no one would have been surprised to see them leave today, yet none of them ended up being moved.

The biggest surprise of the day however, was that Ian Laperriere didn't not get traded. Ian will stay in Denver, at least through the end of the year. He will be a UFA at the end of the year. Francois Giguere no doubt took calls on Lappy today and turned every single offer down. FG must now resign him, or he will have let a valuable asset go to waste.
