This was, obviously, not a great way end 2009.  Maybe the first time since 2001 that you could argue the Avs had as much talent on the ice as the Red Wings (when you factor in all of Detroit’s injuries).  The Avs got beat the old fashioned way - the got outworked.
  • Pavel Datsyuk had a fantastic game and was head and shoulders the best player on the ice - it wasn’t even close.  Offensively, we was really, really good. His goal was a flat out perfect shot.  In the 3rd, he hit the inside of the post - a goal which would have ended the game.  Defensively, no Avs player seemed to be able stick handle past him all game.
  • Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness of gave Ville Leino the 1st star of the game - I’m not sure what game he was watching.
  • The difference in the game was that Datsyuk showed up and the Avs top guns (Stastny, Wolski, Stewart, Hejduk) did not - especially on the PP.  The few chances they did muster either hit Howard in the chest or missed the net.  And there was simply no energy on their 6-4 chance at the end of the game.  Oh, and that awful shorthanded goal allowed too…
  • One player who did show up for Colorado was Brandon Yip.  Go ahead and buy that Yip jersey - he is an NHLer and is very likely to become a blue collar, hard nosed, fan favorite.
  • Sacco - Can we please give Liles a shot?  Maybe the Male Model got the message?  Clark has no confidence with the puck and I’m scared to death every time he is on the ice.
Next game: at Columbus, 5PM MST on Saturday
